Who is Takashi Murakami?
Takashi Murakami is a Japanese contemporary artist born in Tokyo in 1962. His work connects Japanese painting with imagery from manga, animation and popular culture. He developed the theory of Superflat and founded Kaikai Kiki. Flowers and original characters are recognisable elements of his visual world. [1][2]
Understanding Superflat
Superflat emphasises the image surface and the distribution of elements rather than perspectival depth. The theory connects Japanese visual traditions with contemporary painting, animation, graphic design and fashion. It also questions boundaries between fine art and popular culture. Reducing the approach to bright colours alone would miss part of its meaning. [2][3]
What inspires some Akann paintings
Some of our paintings take inspiration from Murakami’s artistic approach. This reference informs our thinking about building a recognisable universe and bringing art into dialogue with everyday images. For Akann, it opens a path for personal exploration rather than a model to reproduce. This is an artistic influence; no collaboration with Takashi Murakami or Kaikai Kiki is claimed.
From looking at paintings to thinking about space
Interior design, furniture design and art meet within Avah Studio. Looking at a painting also means considering its relationship to a room: its presence, its compositional rhythm and the space around it. These questions resonate with our work on spaces and objects, without attributing the design of our projects to Murakami.
